Oh, Dictionary, You!

Oh, Dictionary, You!

I’m sure you most of you saw that “Muffin Top” is trending on Yahoo today. Or, maybe not….maybe you have better things to do. LOL! <—-I can type this now and not be embarrassed cause it’s a real word now. Just sayin’.

Yep, yep, yep. The news of the day (besides the real life tragedy that is going on in Japan and other real world issues, and of course Elizabeth Taylor’s {RIP} real eye color) is that the word “Muffin Top” has been added to the Oxford Dictionary.

Obviously, the first definition is that it is the top of a muffin. Because, well it is. I laughed so hard I cried, though, when I saw that the second definition is: “a protuberance of flesh above the waistband of a tight pair of trousers.”

Honestly, I have mixed feelings about this. First, it is funny. C’mon. You have to admit that it’s funny (and sad) that we live in a society where this is now coined a “real” term by all effects. I mean, we all know that once a word hits the dictionary it’s real. Hence the saying, “ain’t ain’t a word, cause it ain’t in the dictionary.”

See this is my problem. The fact that a muffin top is now real and not a figment of my imagination is horrifying.

“Hello, my name is Suzie and I have a muffin a top.”

As usual, I digress. Cause this ain’t the only word in the dictionary. “Ain’t” is and has been in the dictionary along with “ginormous.” Thank God, for that one, cause I used that one all the time for a while and Matt told me I had to stop saying it cause it wasn’t a real word.Obviously, it is cause it’s in the dictionary so I have free reign over it again. OBVIOUSLY.

Also, “LOL” and “OMG” made it. I can use these in parent emails now cause it’s ok, right? They’re in the dictionary now, people. So, they’re real words. REAL WORDS.

My most favorite addition to the dictionary, though, is the ❤ “heart” symbol. A symbol to the dictionary. Now, that my friends, is the real end to this world. Symbols in the dictionary. What’s next? 🙂 or >:-). Or maybe…:-*….or…@—->–. I mean, there are just so many to choose from. But, I’ll know things really have gone to hell when one these two make it:

Uh, huh. My students taught me those two. I’ll leave those up to your imaginations….

  1. That’s just hilarious. I love when they announce the new words every year. I can’t believe LOL and OMG made it. Or, maybe I can’t believe how long it took. Hmm. I’m not sure.

After reading this, I spent all day telling my husband “I less than three you!” because I seriously can’t see ❤ as an actual "heart." He thinks I'm nuts! 🙂

  8. After I originally commented I clicked the -Notify me when new feedback are added- checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get four emails with the same comment. Is there any means you’ll be able to remove me from that service? Thanks!

  9. Hmm it seems like your site ate my first comment (it was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I too am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new to everything. Do you have any recommendations for newbie blog writers? I’d really appreciate it.
