We spent half the day taking care of Matt’s follow-up appointment today and are relieved to hear that everything looks great!
Matt had his steri-strips removed, which means he can take a real shower!! Woo-hoo! (We are all happy for this news) Also, he can get in the pool starting this weekend. This is exciting cause his two favorite places are the pool and the beach. He graduated from his home PT to outpatient PT, which is a bit harder than what he’s been doing, so he’s still in for some hard work to get his hip moving back to normal.
We also scheduled his next surgery for the right hip for Nov. 3. We had originally planned on doing it this month, but it turns out his surgeon is going to Europe (go figure!). The next surgery date available is Sept. 15, and well, that’s just too close to the baby’s due date. Plus, I know he would like to not be in pain when our baby is born, so we pushed it back to Nov. That gives time for the baby to be born and be at least a month old so I can get into the routine of things and let my body heal from birth before Matt’s next major surgery.
By the way, I don’t think I ever explained what kind of surgeries Matt’s been having. He had a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing on his left hip and he’s due for the same surgery on his right hip, too. He has arthritis in both his hips and this is the best option for him right now due to his age, health, and fitness level. Otherwise, he’d be having a bilateral hip replacement. This can cause a lot of scar tissue, and he would inevitably need it again in about 15-20 years. We wanted to prolong that for as long as possible, obviously.
So, here’s the deal. They put this in his hip:
Oh, before I go let me leave you with a funny little joke we read in the Dr.’s office today while we waited (for over an hour, but well worth it for the best BHR Surgeon in the nation…).
