14 week update and Belly Pic

Today I had my 14 week appointment. No ultrasound (bummer!) but I did get to hear Tiny’s heartbeat- 146!! It’s been so surreal going through this pregnancy. I keep thinking about how depressed I was last summer (and the last 2 years) and how this summer I’ll be preparing for Tiny’s arrival. I just can’t believe I’m finally having a baby!

Even though it seems like I’ve gained a hundred pounds, I’ve only gained 3 since my last appointment (phew!). I know I shouldn’t be so vain, but I’m really not doing well with this weight gain thing. I feel so fat and ugly these days. I know it’s all for my baby, but still- it’s a hard pill to swallow to be getting this big!

Otherwise, I had a physical and everything looked great. I even got to talk to my midwife about having a water birth- the hospital I’m giving birth in has two water birthing rooms! It’s so funny, because every time I go in to an appointment, I’m terrified. By the time I leave I’m on cloud nine. Right now, I’m just ecstatic. I love hearing my baby’s heartbeat. It’s the best sound in the world! Also, my appointment is set for May 5th to find out the sex of the baby! Yes- Cinco de Mayo we’re having a party at my house! 🙂 I’ll probably wait until the next week to divulge on this blog the sex, though. I want to make telling the family a special and fun occasion for them.

Yesterday, I told my students about the pregnancy. I don’t think most of them were surprised, but they were all excited about Tiny! They asked me all kinds of questions and can’t wait to find out the sex of the baby. I also told some of the administrators at school. I can’t tell you what a relief it is to be “out of the closet.” I’ve been stuffing myself like sausage into my old clothes to hide things, but now I can let my belly be free! It feels awesome!

Here’s my 14 week belly pic:

At 14 weeks I:
– feel SO much better! I still have a few pukey feeling moments, but for the most part I’m not green ALL day.
-have more energy. I still take naps but now only for 1.5-2 hours and 4 or 5. I wake up at 5-5:30 am everyday, so naps are inevitable for me.
-started eating poultry again!
-still heart salt and vinegar potato chips SO much. Really, they are so good…I limit myself to one small handful a day, though.
-have major heartburn. It’s like a finger poking itself right underneath my left breast- REALLY HARD! It wakes me up and it sucks!
-pee much more often these days. Walking by the bathroom gives me the urge to go. Standing up gives me the urge. Sleeping gives me the urge. I’m a pee machine!
-have a rounder belly now! I love my belly now that it’s more round. It’s so cute!

Think of it this way: You’re a third of the way through and baby’s a third of the way cooked. Now that the “big stuff” (like skeletal and organ development) is taken care of, your baby starts a period of rapid brain growth, fat buildup and detail work. Highlights this week include:

Your baby now has fingerprints! Book ’em, Danno! Believe it or not, he actually created them himself while swimming around in the amniotic fluid. As he moved his hands, the skin on the tips of his fingers formed unique ridges and folds. That’s why no one on earth has the same fingerprints, not even identical twins! Cool, right? Baby’s arms are now in proportion to his tiny body, but his legs are still on the short size in comparison.

Meconium, that tar-like, sticky first baby poop, is now loading up your baby’s intestines, which means you might want to set aside a bottle of olive oil, one of the few things that will get the gooey poop off of baby’s bottom.

Your baby continues to gain new and impressive skills such as practicing and controlling voluntary muscle movements (this will help him fling food across the room later in life). Your tiny dancer’s movements are no longer the jerky, uncontrollable twitches of yore—he now moves with graceful control.

Your baby is now weighs about an ounce and is the length of a flip phone, or roughly 3.5 inches—he’s tripled in size from a mere three weeks ago! Luckily, you haven’t done the same.
